How does food impact our mental and physical health?

The gut is known as the second brain. The enteric nervous system (located in the gut and responsible for digestion) relies on the same type of neurons and neurotransmitters that are found in the central nervous system. The gut and brain communicate via the nervous system. For example, fear and anxiety can slow down or stop digestion (“knot” or “butterflies” in the stomach) but gastrointestinal issues can also increase anxiety and stress. Immunity is also affected by nutrition, as microorganisms in the gut help regulate the body’s immune response.
