 What is Nutrition Therapy?

therapy edmonton

why is good nutrition important?

therapy edmonton

Nutrition plays an essential role in our physical and mental health as food is the fuel of the body and brain. Good nutrition supports the health of all major systems in the body including the skeleton, muscles, the nervous system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system and immune system. When consuming nutritious food, our systems are balanced and in harmony. Unfortunately, when we have a poor diet, or become ill, overworked, stressed or depressed, the body can easily become dysregulated and imbalanced, resulting in a multitude of issues. Knowing how to get your mind and body back on track consists of a key nutrition component. Eating the right types of food can help relieve chronic conditions and sensitivities, resulting in a restoration of your bodily and nervous systems.

How does food impact our mental and physical health?

therapy edmonton

The gut is known as the second brain. The enteric nervous system (located in the gut and responsible for digestion) relies on the same type of neurons and neurotransmitters that are found in the central nervous system. The gut and brain communicate via the nervous system. For example, fear and anxiety can slow down or stop digestion (“knot” or “butterflies” in the stomach) but gastrointestinal issues can also increase anxiety and stress. Immunity is also affected by nutrition, as microorganisms in the gut help regulate the body’s immune response. Eat well to feel well, literally!

There are various research studies linking poor gut health and nutrition to mental and physical disorders, including: depression, anxiety, stress, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Autism, Spectrum Disorder, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, pain, ulcers, gastrointestinal issues and other “neuro” conditions.

The food we eat plays a key role in certain diseases in our bodies and in our overall mental health.
