Julie Derose

M.C., B.Ed. REGISTERED PROVISIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST
Child, Teen & Family Therapist

Hello! My name is Julie DeRose and I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist at Solace Psychology & Wellness. I received my Master’s in Counselling through City University of Seattle, and prior to that obtained a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alberta.

As a therapist, I offer an environment that is rooted in kindness, empathy, and compassion. For the last 17 years, I have worked in the education field, supporting students through kindergarten to grade 12, both as a teacher and school counsellor. I am very aware of the supports, and challenges, that are required in this group, and pride myself in building solid therapeutic relationships to help with the needs presented during therapy. While working with clients, I am sure to treat all with dignity and respect, in a non-judgemental manner. I create a safe space for children, adolescents, and adults to discuss topics that are difficult and use a collaborative approach to meet the needs of each client.

I am not what happened to me; I am what I choose to become. – Carl Jung

Counselling for Children, Teens & FAMILIES

Throughout my years in education, I have worked with students on a range of presenting concerns, from anxiety, stress, ADHD, grief, loss, separation/divorce, self-esteem, gender identity, friendship concerns, academic and social difficulties. I feel blessed to have had the time in schools since it has made me very familiar with the needs of school-aged children and youth in many facets. In addition, I have worked very closely in developing individual program placements for school-aged children and youth who have had a DSM-V diagnosis and am comfortable supporting families with strategies and interventions to meet the academic, personal, and social goals outlined by a school. I have worked closely with individuals who have had a neurodivergent diagnosis and have many years experience, both in teaching and counselling, in supporting those from many different backgrounds. I am inclusive and sensitive to the needs of each individual I am working with. At all times, my counselling is rooted in empathy and I use strategies from a variety of therapeutic approaches. My goal is to match the interventions to the presenting concerns and ensure each individual is an active participant in the counselling process.

Counselling for ADULTS

While working with adults, I use an integrated approach, tailoring my approach with the different needs and presenting concerns of each individual client, however, I do draw upon strategies and interventions from Solution-Focused, Cognitive-Behavioural, and Narrative Therapy. I am non-judgemental, and accepting of clients from all backgrounds, cultures, and sexual orientations. I lead with compassion and try to understand each individual as an entire person, not just as someone with a presenting concern. I am comfortable working with adults on a array of different topics, such as anxiety, depression, parenting, relationships, motivation, self-esteem, grief, loss, burnout, identity, and suicidal-ideation.

a bit about me

Outside of the office, you can find me spending time with my two beautiful children, aged 3 and 6. They keep me busy going to different activities around the city, such as snowboarding, parkour, and dancing. When I do have some time to myself, I enjoy listening to music, going for walks with my dog, and enjoying the different restaurants and cafes in Edmonton.

I look forward to working with you, your child, and/or family and hope to provide support in your therapeutic journey.
